Work Experience

Work experience is about giving every young person during their final two years of compulsory schooling (Years 10 and 11), the chance to spend a period of time on a local employer’s premises. They carry out tasks during their placement more or less in the same way as normal employees, within the requirements of health and safety legislation. These placements can last for a week or a fortnight or occasionally for one or two days a week over an extended period, depending on circumstances.

Work experience has proved to be a great success in the Humber sub-region over many years and feedback shows that when properly planned, both the young person and the employer benefit from the experience.

Connexions Humber has the job of co-ordinating the many thousands of placements that are needed each year and carries this out on behalf of the Humber Education Business Link Organisation (Humber EBLO). Co-ordination is vital, to ensure that employers aren’t inundated by requests, prevent double booking, maintain quality and provide all young people with an opportunity to participate.

Working with the Humber Education Business Links Organisation (EBLO), we have produced a good gractice guide for employers which tells you all you need to know about offering work experience placements.
