Chris Lennie, Independent Connexions Advocate, talks about how you can air your views and complaints.

The Connexions advocate role is concerned with:

Supporting Complaints

  • I’m here to support you with your complaint until it is sorted.

  • If you want I can phone/write to Connexions on your behalf and make sure you know what’s happening with your complaint.

  • I can also come to meetings with you support you throughout the complaint process.

Representing/Channelling Your Views

  • By letting me know what your views and opinions are about Connexions (i.e. what’s good, bad, any changes you’d make and why?) you can help shape the service for others in the future.

  • I will make sure that your comments are brought to the attention of Connexions managers and keep you informed of any outcomes.

If you have any ideas that you think will be useful to getting your views listened to or would like me to come and meet you or your group then contact me on 01482 225855 or 07971 429383.

You can also mail me or write/come see me directly at:
The Rights and Participation Project,
2nd Floor, The Warren,
Queens Dock Chambers,
Hull, HU1 3DR.

I would also like to take this chance to ask you how you see my role. My job is to work on your behalf and represent your views to whoever you want me to within Connexions. So:

  • What do you think I could also be doing that would support you better?

  • What else can I do to make sure your opinions are heard and taken seriously?

  • How can I make more Young People aware of what I’m doing?

What I’ve Been Up To
My latest consultation (in Connexions centres and Youth Centres) was aimed at finding out:

a) What were Young Peoples views on what Connexions WAS and WHAT it could offer them.
b) Where they aware that Connexions had a Complaints Procedure?

RESULTS and YOUR Comments!!!!

Most Young people I spoke to said they felt that Connexions was for careers advice and information on college courses etc. Many were not aware that you could get support from a Personal Adviser for other things, like –

  • Health advice.

  • Housing problems sorted.

  • Someone to talk to about anything in your life that you need help with. Someone to listen to you and support you.

  • Bullying.

  • Help with benefits and what you’re entitled to.

  • BASICALLY a whole list of things that may be a problem FOR YOU.

They felt that presentations about ‘Connexions’ at Schools and Colleges should mention these other things more clearly!!!!

NO young people were aware that Connexions had a Complaints procedure.

THE NEXT STEP!!!!
I am interested in what you think to these results. Do You agree????...How can they be sorted????

I am arranging to see groups of Young People to discuss these findings and find out what changes they think Connexions could make. YOUR ideas will be passed to Connexions managers and I will keep you informed of any changes made.

Do you agree????? Any other ideas?????
Then contact me

LAST BUSINESS – School Council’s
Are you a member of a school council? I’m interested in meeting up with school councils and finding out their views on how Connexions is working in their schools. Give me a ring or email me and I’ll get in touch… See you… until next time.
